Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-1869) was an American composer and pianist, best known as a virtuoso performer of his own romantic piano works.

Gottschalk began performing this piece in 1851 while touring Spain, then calling it Gran galop de bravura. In 1854 it was published under the title Tournament Galop.
